Volvo XC70 returns from the dead, but it is no longer a car

The Volvo XC70 is back, but this time it is a non-jacked high-riding, but a plug-in hybrid crossover.

The XC70 is the first Volvo product that runs on the new scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), mainly designed for “Extended Range Plug -in Hybrid” drive.

Newly re -installed CEO Hakan Samuelsson says that the new XC70 offers a “very attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars”.

The details of the drive and the battery still have to be released, but the company claims that the XC70 has an EV range of 200 km when using the generous CLTC standard of China.

In the same way, Volvo keeps its powder dry with regard to the dimensions of the XC70, whereby the company easily explains that it is “slightly larger and more spacious” than the 4.7 m long XC60.

The XC70 will be available in China later this year and Volvo says that it will explore “potential extra markets at a later stage”. More details about the car will probably be released closer to the entire launch.

Just like the fully electric ES90-Sedan and EX90 crossover, the XC70 has a grill-free front-end with the latest interpretation of the Hammer headlight image of the Thor.

Along the side, the XC70 has sinky door handles and frameless windows. While they are at the back, the characteristic hockey stick lights from the brand are all the way to the roof.

In 2021, Volvo was one of the first ‘Legacy’ car manufacturers who are committed to a alone-electric reach, and promised to sell his last vehicle with an internal combustion engine by 2030. In Australia, the brand was even more ambitious and claimed that it would go alone by 2026.

Although the market share for electric vehicles continues to grow, especially in Europe and China, their admission was not as fast as many car manufacturers had originally presented. Volvo has now revised its goal, hoping to be an electrified vehicle-plug-in hybrid and full electric property for 90 percent of global turnover by 2030.

It is clear that the launch of a completely new plug-in hybrid model in 2025 was not part of Volvo’s planning at the start of the decade. With the XC70, Volvo not only responds to the preferences of the powertrain, but according to Mr. Samuelsson it is also “example of regionalization, where we adapt to the local market needs”.

Following the EM90 People Mover, the XC70 is the second Volvo model that is mainly designed with China in mind.

The XC70 name has been since the middle of 2010. Originally launched in 1997 as a high-quality, four-wheel drive variant of the V70 car pattern after the very popular Subaru Outback based on Liberty Wagon.

Branding differed from market to market, with some people called the Volvo Wagon the V70 -Cross country, and others the V70 XC. Only after the launch and the success of the XC90 -Crossover did the company finally settled on the XC70 name.

From 2016, Volvo simplified its model name structure around the 40, 60 and 90 series, which eliminates the V70 and S80. It also reserved the XC priority for its SUV-like cross-overs, with raised wagons that return to the Cross Country name.
