In Haikou, Hanan Island, China, a striking contemporary single-material design for a new cinema and coffee shop One Plus Partnership Ltd. was built from simple brick.
Floating overhead and swelling from the foundation, the monochromatic interior of the Haikou Gaoxingli Insun Cinema & Coffee Bar is animated by light and shadow, a jack-on-jack brickwork pattern and elegant curves that evoke movement.
With the island’s location in mind, the architectural firm took inspiration from the ocean, with rolling wave motifs extending from both the ceiling and floor, serving as lighting elements, tables and chairs.
“We placed the stones precisely so that they resemble waves,” the studio said in a statement. “These waves are so layered that you can see them all from every angle.”
The use of block-shaped brick adds a playful tension to the idea of fluidity, giving the interior a sense of solidity and solidity while simultaneously suggesting movement or transformation. As a counterpoint to water, the designers chose the material as a nod to the sandy coastline that surrounds the island.
