A South Florida banking customer has suffered significant losses after falling prey to a sophisticated impersonation scheme involving fake bank representatives.
The victim, Randall Kahn, says he was contacted by individuals posing as Wells Fargo employees who provided apparently authentic details to convince him to withdraw large amounts of cash from multiple branches over several days. reports NBC Miami.
The instructions included having a rideshare driver pick up the money and supposedly deposit the money into a secure account.
Kahn says he followed the instructions and withdrew a total of $251,300 from nine branches in seven days.
“The reality for me is that this is all I’ve been working on for the last 25 years of my life. To take care of my family, to take care of my grandson.”
The bank has denied refund claims, stating that proper policies were followed for the business account and that large personal withdrawals from verified customers are common.
Authorities recommend reporting such incidents to local police, the FBI and the FTC.
