What is the ultimate city car?

Josh Nevett

While the population of Australia continues to grow, our cities have become both larger and busier.

Nevertheless, city cars have lost their attraction, with new car buyers who rather revolved around SUVs and cross -overs with extra ground freedom and an increased seating position.

But there is still a business to make for something smaller that is easy to drive, easy to park and to be perfect for the office for the office or a trip to the shops.

There are still many vehicles for sale that meet those criteria – the Kia Picanto, Byd Dolphin, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 and MG 3, to name just a few.

Hundreds of new cars are available via Carexper now. Get the experts by your side and score a lot. Browse now.

But that does not mean that the term ‘city car’ has a single definition, as you will see from our nominations below.

After all, some need loading capacity to carry loads in the city, while others may be better served by a luxury sedan that gets the stress out of long distance in peak hours of traffic.

So, without further delay, here are the city cars that every member of the Carexper The editorial team would buy.

Marton Pettendy: Hyundai i20 N

I am going to be boring here and stay with a mainstream brand that offers a five -year warranty, a lifelong service plan and a well -populated rural dealer network for the time I leave the city.

But the smallest hot hatch from Hyundai is anything but boring, with more strength and torque than his only direct competitor, the Volkswagen Polo GTI and a manual transmission blessed with slightly speckled, perfectly placed pedals that make the daily grinding as pleasant as heel in the twall.

The i20 N is also supplied with all the safety and multimediatic you need. And for only $ 35,500 before on-road costs, it is not only the most affordable bona fide hot hatch from Australia, but also the last of a great but dying breed.

James Wong: Abarth 695

Yes, I’m crazy.

There are few City authorities that are more lively and more attractive than the ‘Pazzo’ of the Italians on the Fiat 500, especially with a manual gearbox.

It’s loud, it’s fast, and it’s Flippin cute. There is no parking space in which it cannot fit, because it is actually a four -wheeled bike.

For me, a Melbournian in the most European city in Australia, why not do what the Europeans are doing?

Jack Quick: Byd Dolphin

Although I want to say the Ford Ranger Raptor only for laughter, I can’t in good conscience. However, many people choose this.

With this in mind, my ultimate city car is an EV because of how nippy they are at low speeds, how quiet they can be, and also how easy the charging they can be (provided you have space at home).

There are many small EVs to choose from, but the one who stands out the most is the BYD Dolphin, which starts at $ 29,990 for on-roads. This is wild because many gasoline-driven equivalents are now more expensive at the basic level.

Another city car that I would like to choose, but that is not because it is not sold in Australia is the Citroen Ami. Technically not a car but rather a quadricycle, I saw hope Of this during my European holiday last year and thought they would be so much fun to drive around.

William Stopford: Mazda 2

I would have said the Ford Puma, given its compact dimensions, slightly higher riding height, but nice hatchback-like treatment, but Ford Australia went on and dropped him. Boe!

I will keep it simple and go with the proven (code word for bloody old Mazda 2. The infotainment is terribly dated, but I still love the way it drives. It still looks sharp and it feels built to last a long time.

The MG 3 Hybrid+ is a second place, because I found it economic and generally smooth the transitions between gasoline and electric current, although it still needs a tweak or two in its powertrain.

Jordan Mulach: Hyundai i20 N

What is the point of having something small if it can’t be fun either?

The i20 N is a pint-size i30 N in all respects, with the possibility to surpass his big brother on the right track.

It is an absolute pleasure to drive and is demonstrably closer to his ethos and version with a real hatchback from the 80s than any other model that is for sale in Australia.

Add the support of a large brand plus endless events for owners, and it is difficult to ignore why this is a bargain for the performance.

Josh Nevett: Abarth 695

It is not long for this world, but the gasoline-driven Abarth 695 will go down like an icon with a pint format.

Compact, fast, fun and relatively practical with the back seats that have been folded down – what more do you want from a car that spends its time with zippers through the city?

And in my modest opinion there is no better sounding four-pot. The 132 KW T-Jet makes a mockery of some V8s when it comes to auditory sensations, while it all enjoys less than 6.0 l/100 km.

Although you can buy the 695 with a manual transmission, I would take the car for daily tasks in the concrete jungle.

Regardless of Variant and Specification, Abarth’s last ice model will bring a smile to your face during every ride, and you will never have trouble finding a suitable parking space at the end of it.

Sean Lander: Peugeot Partner

Let’s face it, if you are looking for buying a micro -car and living in a built -up area, you probably don’t want to be the local Uber. So a van with three seats makes perfect sense.

It is only about 200 mm longer than a GWM ora, can take up to 1000 kg of a load and the best thing is to park in loading zones to quickly dive into a store and grab your decaf-almand-soëlium-soy-ooat-milk latte.

It even comes in an EV version!

Yes, I have a bit of fun here, because as the national simpleton I am, I hate the existence of these small cars. If you have to collapse for the requirement of a small car, you might as well have one that is also practical.

Max Davies: Mini Cooper

It is a city car, so in my mind smaller is better.

Admittedly, I was influenced by Sean’s partner choice for the benefits of the charging zone and considered going for a Volkswagen Caddy, but then I remembered that I would be limited for that. That is why I stay in the classic Stadsauto formula and go for the three-door Mini Cooper.

I have always liked the appearance of the current generation of Coopers. They appeal to me as cute little things with funky styling, even if they are not nearly as little as the minis or old one used to be.

That fits perfectly as something nice and easy to drive through the streets of the city, especially because it has that nippy row properties, modern minis are known for. The interior is also a nice place to be with its set-up in the left field, and it is all supported by generally sturdy BMW technology-it simply checks many boxes for me.

The only thing is that it is reasonably pricey, starting with just under $ 42,000 before on-roads for the basic model. Yet this would be at the top of my city list and it would not be terrible with longer weekend drives.
