Chicago and woman who was accused of shooting a man who became ‘disrespectful’ on a red line train in the center of Chicago, received a four-year imprisonment on Monday.
Erica Berry, 39, argued guilty of an accusation of worsened discharge of a firearm for right James Obish. The prosecutors dropped four counts of attempted murder, a more serious indictment that Berry was confronted with.
In May 2023, prosecutors said that Berry was alone in a train in a northerly direction when a 35-year-old man walked around and started a conversation around 8 p.m.
Berry later told the police that the man flirted with her and that she “tried to abandon him well,” said prosecutors, who said that CTA surveillance cameras won a large part of the incident.
But the man continued to exist by sitting next to Berry, who dismissed him twice before he got up and was sitting near two other women on the other side of the train. The verbal back and forth between Berry and the man dragged on, causing the two women to get up and leave, said civil servants.
In the end Berry pulled a gun from her bag and shot to the man. The man did not move, so Berry shot another shot and shot him down again as he tried to run through the doors to the next Trainuto, claimed prosecutors.
A CTA dog protection officer at Roosevelt station heard gun shots come from the platform and looked down the stairs while Berry shot him. The guard followed Berry until police officers in Chicago caught up with her about a block from the station.
CPD officers said they found a .22 caliber revolver in Berry’s purse.
The victim underwent an operation for shot wounds on his left hip and right elbow. One of Berry’s defense lawyers argued that she might have acted in self -defense and to defend the other women on the train.
Her prison sentence of four years will be reduced to two years for good behavior. It will be reduced by another 632 days for credits she has earned while in custody pending the process.
