Chicago police officers on routine patrol found a murder victim at night in Lawndale. Researchers could not immediately identify the victim, but a CPD statement said he seemed to be ‘about teenager’.
Nobody called 911 to report shots that were fired in the area before the boy was found in the back garden of a house in the 1500 block of South Kildare around 2:10 am Shell shells were nearby.
That block was followed by the Shotspotter Gunfire Detection System until mayor Brandon Johnson ended the relationship of the city with the company at midnight on September 23. If the technology was still used, the police would have been informed of the gunfire that killed the victim and the location where the shots were fired.
The only report of rifle fire in the area came on Saturday around 6.42 pm when a patrol officer Radio was consulted that he heard shots shooting north of the 18th and Kildare.
Detectives now work to find out what happened – and when.
Local ald. Monique Scott (24th) was a vocal supporter of the Shotspotter system. She was part of the 66% majority of the city council who tried to keep the gunfire technology active, despite the determination of Johnson to pull the plug.
“We are actually going to play Russian roulette with the life of our voters,” Said Scott A few weeks before Johnson ended the service.
“You say you have a campaign blade,” Scott told Johnson Days before he ended the service, “but you can’t bring life over a campaign bow.”
After a 14-year-old boy was shot, killed and undiscovered in her neighborhood on October 1, Scott Johnson called on to reverse the race.
“Our community is in crisis. I am at alderman David Moore to immediately encourage Mayor Johnson to reactivate Shotpotter, ” Scott wrote on social media. “One lost life is too much.”
From 12:01 pm on September 23, 2024, Chicago terminated his relationship with Shotspotter, a gunfire detection system that was used in 12 of the most of the city implemented by violence.
Mayor Brandon Johnson stubbornly refused to reconsider his decision to dismantle the Schotspotter, although the vast majority of aldermen, many citizens, the victim’s lawyers and his chosen police -superintendent asked that it was present.
This reporting series, called “Brandon’s Bodies”, wants to document matters of shooting victims and police investigations that may have benefited from shot detection technology.
The general criteria for inclusion are a Scottish victim that is found outside at a location that was previously operated by the Scottish Potter with either no accompanying 911 calls on gunfire or (2) calling on gunfire in a general area that did not lead to the timely location of the victim.
