THE circumstances surrounding the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy remain a mystery nearly six decades later.
JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963, but his death was shrouded in suspicion.
The murder sparked widespread speculation, spawning conspiracy theories ranging from the “famous umbrella man” to an alleged CIA cover-up.
In 2017, 2018 and 2021, files were released by the National Archives in an attempt to solve the mystery.
President Biden will order once-secret details from a trove of about 8,000 documents to be made public today. Politics reported.
It is not yet known what will be in the papers, but officials believe “there will be no obvious bombings,” the newspaper said.
But the secrecy surrounding U.S. government documents and the existence of top-secret files related to the assassination have fueled theories that a cover-up took place.
The US Sun has examined the theories that have circulated in the decades since JFK’s death.
COVER
President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas as he traveled in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza.
Shortly afterwards, gunman Lee Harvey Oswald, a 24-year-old self-described Marxist, was arrested at a nearby movie theater.
He denied shooting anyone and later claimed to reporters that he was an “easter.”
He was accused of shooting the president to death with a $21 mail-order rifle from a sixth-floor window of a nearby textbook warehouse.
Two days after the assassination and his arrest, Oswald was escorted from the Dallas Police Department to the county jail.
As he was being taken out in front of the world’s media, a man named Jack Ruby stepped forward and shot him dead.
Ruby was later found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. He appealed, but died in prison of an illness before his retrial could take place.
The official 1964 Warren Commission report found that Oswald had been the sole shooter, and another 1979 congressional investigation found no evidence to support the theory that the CIA was involved.
But some say this was a cover-up.
UMBRELLA MAN
Conspiracy theorists have pointed to a mysterious man holding an umbrella and wearing a raincoat as JFK’s motorcade drives through Dealey Plaza.
But it was a dry and warm day in Dallas and “Umbrella Man” was standing near where Kennedy was shot.
Umbrella Man is described by The Washington Post as the best-known conspiracy theory involving ‘multiple shooting centers’.
One speculation is that the Umbrella Man “shot a poison dart into Kennedy’s neck, immobilizing him so Oswald or others could deliver a kill shot.”
And Oliver Stone’s 1991 film “JFK” showed the Umbrella Man sending signals to his assassins.
The man under the umbrella ultimately turned out to be Louie Steven Witt.
Witt claimed he held the umbrella to protest Joseph P. Kennedy’s appeasement policies.
He also said the umbrella was linked to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s umbrella and the reconciliation between Hitler and the Nazis.
GRASSY TUBERS LAND
Some people believe the theory about a second gunman who took part in the shooting from the grassy knoll of Dealey Plaza.
The grassy knoll is a small hill within Dealey Plaza.
In 2018, a study published in the journal Heliyon found that JFK was not shot from the grassy knoll, based on analysis of video footage.
According to the study: “The findings do not completely rule out a conspiracy, but they do refute the most prominent theories that the fatal shot was fired from the grassy knoll.
“They are also against the idea that the Zapruder film turns out to be a conspiracy. In fact, the opposite appears to be true.”
Dr. Nicholas Nalli, senior researcher at IMSG, Inc. and author of the study, said: “I discovered that the Zapruder film shows President Kennedy being shot from behind and not from the infamous grassy knoll, confirming the official autopsy findings – that’s the only smoking gun ‘ in the movie.
“The historical fact is that the U.S. federal government’s investigations consisted of honest officials with high ethical standards who, despite difficult circumstances, got the basics of the case substantially correct.”
covert operation by LYNDON JOHNSON
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was sworn in as president after Kennedy’s death, has also been accused by conspiracy theorists of involvement in the assassination.
Some have suggested he wanted to cover up scandals or take control of the country through a coup.
According to CNN, conspiracy researcher Dave Perry denounced this theory as “based primarily on statements made by Madeleine Brown.”
Brown claimed she had an affair with Johnson and that he attended a party with former Vice President Richard Nixon and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover the day before the assassination.
Perry explained that Brown was told by LBJ, “After tomorrow, those Kennedys will never embarrass me again. That’s not a threat. That’s a promise.”
But Perry insists: “That’s absolutely not true.”
“We have found no evidence and we know that all the things Madeleine Brown said were made up,” he said.
CIA COMPLETE
Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone was the writer behind the 1991 film JFK: The Story That Won’t Go Away.
It investigated the circumstances leading up to the shooting and what happened afterwards.
Stone emphasized that the idea that the CIA – the US Central Intelligence Agency – hid the truth is no longer a conspiracy theory, but a “conspiracy fact.”
He has interviewed historians, forensic experts and people closely involved with the case to create a documentary, JFK Revisited.
Some of the evidence came about as a result of his 1991 film, which was nominated for eight Oscars and won two.
The fury it caused was enough to convince US authorities to gradually release documents about the murder, which were to remain secret until 2029.
It’s a mystery that has gripped him from the moment the news shook the planet.
Stone, who was 17 at the time, says, “When you assassinate an American president in broad daylight in front of the entire world, people immediately sensed that there were greater forces at work than one man.”
Meanwhile, Dave Perry told CNN that he has not yet debunked the theory that the CIA “was involved.”
Perry said, “Presumably Kennedy was tired of the CIA’s shenanigans.
“He discovered that the CIA was trying to kill [Cuban leader Fidel] Castro, that’s a fact.
“So the argument is that the CIA felt that Kennedy was going to disband them. And as a result, they were the ones who ordered Kennedy’s assassination.”
ALIENS
Some conspiracy theorists made unsubstantiated claims, bizarrely claiming that a secret alien base may have played a role in the murder.
According to Spyscapeformer American radio personality Milton William Cooper shared the news about an alien base he claimed was on the moon, called Project Luna.
Cooper pushed the conspiracy theory about JFK’s assassination through an alleged “gas pressure device.”
He said the president’s limousine driver was being supplied by the aliens because JFK was preparing to expose a conspiracy between Washington and the aliens.
There is no evidence to support the allegations.
