The murder of a man last week near his house in Lincoln Park was the tragic end of a failed, random robbery attempt, painted by officers of justice according to the photo when they accused a suburbs of the crime on Friday.
Josalyn Fowler, 25, also known as 911 after she had killed Kevin Patel and gave the operator false information about how the murderer fled, prosecutors claim.
Assistant lawyer Mike Pekara said in a court who applied for Video Patel, a 28-year-old actuary, wore a backpack while walking around 9:28 pm on April 16 to his house in the 800 block of West Lill.
Fowler and her cousin Patel approached one step from his front door. Just after he had passed him, Fowler and her cousin turned around and video showed that Fowler now had a gun in her hand, Pekara said.
Allegedly she tried to grab Patel’s backpack from behind, but he withdrew and struggled briefly for control over the bag before Patel stepped back and distance herself from Fowler.
At that moment Fowler stretched out the gun for her and Patel shot into the chest. A witness told the police that they heard a male voice say that they had to come from the area and that they immediately ran to the east, towards Halsted Street.
But only a minute after the murder, Fowler used a telephone that was registered in her name to call 911 about the shooting. She reported that someone was just shot on Lill and Halst was by a shooter who ran to the west, the opposite direction from which they and her cousin actually ran, Pekara explained.
Detectives gathered a series of videos that Fowler and her cousin showed that they showed side to the Fullerton Red Line Station, where they hoped the Tourniquet and waited a few minutes on a southern train to arrive, Pekara continued.
They left the train at State-Lake and then walked a few blocks to a car, which they used to leave the area.
Researchers have carried out CTA images of Fowler via face recognition software, which identified her as a possible match, Fowler said. From there, the police linked her to the 911 call. Fowler’s cousin and several people who knew Fowler from high school would have reportedly identified her in surveillance images.
When the police arrested Fowler on Tuesday, they were said to have found a loaded .40-caliber gun with an extensive magazine in her backpack. Lab tests have established that the gun is the one who has shed the Shell housing found in the murder scene, Pekara said.
Judge Mary Marubio held Fowler during a hearing on Friday. Fowler is accused of murder in the first degree, murder while committing a forced crime and attempt at armed robbery, CPD said.
