Chicago police have arrested one of four men responsible for robbing passengers on the Red Line in December, according to a CPD media statement. Records show the man was convicted in 2023 of committing another robbery at the Roosevelt CTA station downtown.
Jemaal Muhammad, 20, of DeKalb, is charged with three counts of theft after police arrested him Tuesday in the first block of South State Street. His arrest came on the same day that transit investigators released surveillance images of the robbers and asked for help identifying them.
CPD said Mohammed was one of the men who robbed a 15-year-old boy on a train near 95th Street on December 29 around 10:52 p.m. Less than ten minutes later, he and his accomplices robbed a 44-year-old man. on a train near 79th Street, police said.
The community alert issued Tuesday also linked the group to a third robbery near the Cermak Red Line station late Dec. 20. Mohammed will not be charged in this case, according to the CPD media statement.
Mohammed will appear in court on Thursday for a detention hearing.
Mohammed was accused of committing an aggravated robbery at the Roosevelt CTA station in the Loop in June 2022, according to CPD and court documents. He was given a three-year sentence in March 2023, but spent no time in prison after receiving credit for time spent in the county jail and the state’s standard 50% credit for good behavior.
Court records show he has a pending misdemeanor case in which he is accused of carrying a knife on Dec. 11 in the 7900 block of South Lafayette.
