CHICAGO – A Venezuelan migrant is charged with attempted murder, accused of shooting a colleague who made a joke at his expense.

“Do you see how you die?” Jorber Pena Acosta is said to have asked the man this before opening fire on him outside their workplace last Thursday afternoon.

Prosecutors said Acosta, 26, the 29-year-old victim, and others worked at a packaging plant in the 4300 block of South Packers. During a lunch break, the victim made Acosta the butt of a joke at the water machine, prosecutors said in an arrest request.

Acosta, they said, didn’t take it well and told the victim he would see him in the parking lot.

Around 1:30 p.m., the victim was standing next to his car, looking at his phone while on a break, when Acosta pulled up in a red truck, the petition said. Acosta rolled down his window and shouted, “Do you see how you die?” in Spanish, and fired about five shots at his colleague, prosecutors alleged.

All the bullets missed the victim, but two bullets hit the passenger door he was standing next to. Surveillance cameras captured the incident.

A witness who saw the shooting followed Acosta from the scene and helped police locate him in the 2800 block of South Homan, the detention provider said.

Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman granted the state’s detention request. Acosta is charged with attempted first-degree murder.
