NYC sees the least reported murders, shootings in modern history to start: mayor: mayor

New York City has registered the lowest number of murders and shootings in modern history during the first five months of the year, mayor Eric Adams announced on Sunday.

There were 112 murders from January to May, a less than the 113 included in 2014 and 2017, the previous records for the same period, according to NYPD data obtained by the post.

18 murders were reported for the month of May, a less than the previous low of 19 included in May 2019.

In the meantime there were 264 shootings for the five months of 2025, three less than the 267 included in 2018.

There were 54 shootings in May, which defeated the previous low of 61 in 2019, the data showed.

Adams, who is looking for re -election on an independent ballot paper this year, heralded the data.

“When I took the oath of the office as a mayor, I made a promise that we would make this city safer and that we would bring down the crime. Today the figures that we have not only fulfilled that promise – we surpassed it,” Adams said.

“I am exceptionally proud to share that from January 2025 to May 2025, New York City has seen the lowest number of shootings and murders in the recorded history.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch thanked officers and the mayor – but took a shot in the recent reforms of criminal law.

“This kind of results never happen by accident, and certainly not at a time when the criminal laws of the state have made a rotating door of our criminal justice system,” Tisch said.

“This is how your mayor and your NYPD agents have delivered the safest January-May for rifles in New York City: to go ruthlessly in our streets for more than three years; and a data-driven police strategy that places more agents in the right places at the right times to do what they do better than anyone else in the world.”

Tisch promised that the NYPD “will not leave” and said that a summer violence reduction plan of the department is “fat and aggressive and designed to continue to stimulate the same historical safety win.”
