DOUGLAS Henshall has faced severe backlash on social media after claiming Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin was empty.
The Shetland actor, who played DI Perez in the BBC programme, wondered whether mourners would still be queuing if they “knew the Queen isn’t in that coffin”.
On Twitter, the 56-year-old said: “Do you think the line would be that long if people knew the Queen isn’t in that coffin? Or do they know and it’s just symbolic?”
Some of Douglas’ followers were outraged by the comment and asked him not to “destroy” the experience for mourners with his “skepticism.”
The TV star insisted it was a ‘genuine question’ as he was concerned about the safety risk involved.
One person replied: “Douglas, please stop spreading lies and conspiracy theories like this. You are better than this.”
Another said: “Whether she’s there or not, it’s a social imperative for everyone to show their respect. Please don’t ruin this experience for them with skepticism.”
“Another shocking tweet: you’re having a nightmare lately,” wrote another.
After being questioned by his followers as to whether Her Majesty’s body was in the coffin, Douglas said: “I don’t know, of course, but I can’t imagine that she would be there purely for security reasons if nothing else .”
Mourners lined up to see the Queen lie in state at Westminster Hall to pay their last respects.
Tens of thousands of people lined the streets waiting for their turn to see her coffin, while many others from around the world followed the livestream.
Her funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday.
