Uber driver accused of sexual abuse of passenger on the north side is 'a risk for every woman': judge

A director of journeys was held as a “risk for every woman” after officers of justice accused him of sexual abuse of a female passenger he grabbed in a north side bar.

The woman ordered a ride after leaving a bar on January 25 and the 26-year-old Uber driver Basel Alwai accepted the track, the prosecutors say.

Alwai asked the woman to sit on the front seat instead of the back and then canceled the ride in the Uber app, according to a detention -put -off. He continued making unwanted progress, grabbed the woman’s thighs and kissed her when the vehicle stopped, the petition explained.

After she asked the woman if she wanted coffee, Alwai drew a 7-Eleven parking lot at 1532 West Lawrence and closed his doors. The prosecutors said he kissed the woman again with violence and touched her, even while she tried to move his hands away.

He is also accused of locking the doors so that she could not get out of the car and take her phone so that she could not ask for help. The prosecutors said he had put his number in her phone, then gave it back and asked her to call him to set up a date.

Judge Deidre Dyer granted the detention of the State and called the alleged behavior an “opportunistic crime” that “is a risk for every woman.”

Alwai is accused of illegal restraint and exacerbated criminal sexual abuse while committing another crime.
