The Global Citizen Festival in New York – a glitzy concert to raise money for the world’s poor – has turned into a messy, destructive affair that caused $620,000 in damage to Central Park’s jewel, the Great Lawn, last year.
Put aside the blatant hypocrisy of a global charity destroying a green space year after year: why doesn’t the city stand up for itself?
City Council Member Gale Brewer has had enough; she wants the disorderly spectacle of the Great Lawn moved to another location. State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal agrees.
Good.
The park is the city’s backyard should are kept in top condition, and there’s no reason to let a star-studded orgy of self-indulgence tear up the turf.
But where is this tender concern when it comes to a much bigger park problem – namely the fact that crime there is skyrocketing?
NYPD data shows that the park saw a 222% increase in robberies over the same period in 2023 – yes, you read that right.
The number of crimes has doubled.
Still, Brewer suggested at a recent city council meeting that the city’s solution would be to give the young illegal immigrants who are playing a major role in the crime spike “something to do.” . . between now and when school starts.”
There is some superficial racism here: Brewer clearly assumes that migrants will turn to crime if they are not distracted enough.
But more broadly: what on earth is she talking about?
In light of that ideology, why is destroying the lawn in Central Park such a big deal to demand action at all?
The left expects New Yorkers to tolerate all forms of social decay.
Like random lunatics roaming the subway attacking and killing straphangers as part of the cost of living in the city.
Gothamites are told again and again that crime is not a problem and that policing it is white supremacy.
They are vilified as racists for daring to suggest that too many illegal immigrants have arrived here, and for objecting to their tax dollars being spent on food and shelter.
But a bunch of concertgoers ruining a lawn in Central Park?
That’s a bridge too far! Time to restore public order!
The selectivity that liberal Democrats show in choosing which public chaos to really concern themselves with speaks volumes.
