CHICAGO – A woman was shot this afternoon in an alley in Edgewater, Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th) said in an email. The number of shootings in the area is now up 300% compared to last year.

Chicago police responded to calls of shots fired in the 5900 block of North Kenmore around 3:20 p.m. and found the woman with a gunshot wound to the leg, Manaa-Hoppenworth said. She said the shooting happened in the alley between Kenmore and Winthrop.

The woman’s age is not unknown, but Manaa-Hoppenworth said she is an adult.

Officers on the scene said the shooter was a black male, approximately 6 feet tall and wearing a black hoodie.

The shooting happened just a few hours after Manaa-Hoppenworth said she was “outraged and disheartened” by “recent gun violence incidents” in her neighborhood.

So far this year, 20 people have been shot in Edgewater, up from five last year and 10 in 2022.
