Woman shot while getting out of a car in Edgewater, where shootings have risen 260% this year

CHICAGO – A 30-year-old woman was shot Wednesday morning as she got out of a car in the Edgewater neighborhood. The shooting occurred while police were investigating a separate shooting aboard a nearby Red Line train, but officials say the incidents are not related in any way.

The woman was exiting a vehicle in the 5400 block of North Winthrop when the gunman came up and started shooting around 10:28 a.m. A bullet hit the woman in the arm. A companion took her to Weiss Hospital for treatment.

Chicago police said the gunman ran south toward Winthrop after firing the shots. He remains at large.

Earlier, around 8:48 a.m., a woman shot another passenger aboard a Red Line train near the Thorndale station, officials said. She allegedly spat at the victim, argued with him and then fired one shot, hitting him in the left shoulder. Some passengers held the woman until police arrived. Other passengers jumped from the train and walked along the elevated tracks while the third rail remained electrified.

The police found a firearm at the scene and arrested the woman. Charges are pending.

As of Wednesday night, 18 people have been shot in Edgewater this year; that’s an increase from five for all of 2023 and ten for all of 2022. Notably, seven of this year’s sixteen victims were shot in six separate incidents at a single residential complex in the 6000 block of North Kenmore.
