Chicago-a man who is accused of having shot another man during a theft in Chinatown and then shooting a woman during another robbery less than an hour later, received a 13-year prison sentence.
Jerome Powell, 27, was on a trial for burglary and on a bail for a crime gun case when he participated in the robbery attempts and photographed late on July 14, 2021, said prosecutors.
The first crime took place in Chinatown, where a man and woman were in a car when four men ran to their vehicle, and a gray Dodge Durango pulled them for them. Prosecutors said Powell leaned in the passenger door, pointed a gun on the driver’s face and eventually fired a shot that hit the driver. Other crew members reportedly demanded the valuables of the victims, but they could not understand what the robbers said because the victims only speak Mandarin.
Powell would later admit that he “shoots at the Chinese man” because he “tried to frighten the Chinese man,” claimed public prosecutors after his arrest. The victim’s dashcam also recorded the entire robbery and the face of Powell was clearly visible.
About 45 minutes later, a gray Dodge Durango blocked a woman while using the Drive-up ATM of a sofa on the south side. Powell stepped out of the SUV and ordered the woman from her car as he pointed a gun at her, said public prosecutors. But the woman could not open her door because she was too close to the ATM. She started to make a backup so that she could get out.
Officials said Powell suddenly fired a bullet in the car that hit the back of the dashboard and made sure that the speedometer was smashing glass in the woman’s face. Powell and another thief ran from the scene while a third perpetrator drove away in the Durango. The woman has not suffered any serious injuries.
The police found the wallet of the Chinatown -shooting victim on the sidewalk near the terrace machine. Bank surveillance cameras reportedly have registered the second hold-up and shooting.
Powell later admitted that he was shot in the woman’s car because he “tried to stop her,” said prosecutors. He reportedly told the researchers that he was sorry.
Detectives have merged the case by a third incident: about nine hours after the bank shooters, the police who responded to a car accidentally saw four men running out of the destroyed vehicle. Powell was said to be one of three pechards. The police had no reason to arrest Powell, so they sent him on their way.
The body -based and dash cameras of officers have recorded the interaction. Detectives ultimately used those videos and images of the two robberies to build their business against Powell.
On Wednesday he argued guilty of worsened battery by discharging a firearm in connection with the Chinatown case and worsened discharge of a firearm in an occupied vehicle for the second crime. Judge Natosha Toller condemned him for up to 13 years with the time to be operated simultaneously.
