A CNN panel sounded the alarm over a recent poll showing Joe Biden losing to former President Donald Trump in major swing states in a hypothetical 2024 matchup, calling it a “major wake-up call for all Democrats.”
A New York Times/Sienna College poll from last weekend showed Trump beating Biden in five of the six major battleground states, defeating him by more than 300 electoral college votes.
CNN analyst Errol Louis downplayed the poll’s findings, claiming that Democrats will “come home” as the 2024 election approaches and that the idea that black voters will abandon Biden was “not something you take that seriously.” can take.”
“The same goes for the Latino vote. You know, the idea that Trump could almost understand [Biden among] female voters…I just don’t believe that,” he added.
But Louis warned that Democrats must “activate” their base to shore up Biden’s hemorrhaging support.
“But what this does do is it suggests that Democrats need to get out there, that they need to talk to their younger voters. I think they should be concerned about the 18 to 29 year olds because they’re getting their information from different places. They get it from TikTok or wherever,” Louis claimed.
“You also have to talk to women and join the coalitions, the activist coalitions that are the foundation of the Democratic Party. The labor coalitions, the environmentalists, the women’s groups. You have to do it, you have to edit them.
“You have to make sure everyone is informed,” he said, adding, “So we have to have this conversation in six months and see where they are.”
CNN’s John Avlon pushed back against Louis’ analysis, claiming the poll is indicative of the Biden campaign’s inability to outline a “fundamental message.”
“With all due respect to my dear friend Errol, I disagree with him on the attitude of: ‘Yes, everyone comes home, especially if you call them,’” Avlon responded. “I think it’s too late to wait for next year. What this is, among other things, is the inability to really get the basic messages through to the base and also to sway voters. This poll should be an important wake-up call for all Democrats, as well as the White House.”
“Yes, it is a snapshot. Yes, Democrats performed dramatically better in special elections this year. There are things that counterbalance,” he continued.
“But if Democrats are starting to slide among young people, among Hispanics and African Americans, while many of the fact patterns are quite good, it’s partly because Biden’s team has not sold on the performance of this administration, and they have not done either. respond clearly enough to these kinds of trends that are not their friend.”
Biden spokesman Kevin Munoz turned down the weekend’s poll findings, which say that “forecasts more than a year out often look a little different a year later.”
“[W]We will win in 2024 by putting our heads down and doing the work, not by worrying about a poll,” he told the New York Times.
