Update (1810ET): No…
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden suggested as much If Congress Doesn’t Send Ukraine More Money Now, It Could ‘Encourage’ Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade a NATO ally, which would lead to “US forces fighting Russian forces.”
The threat was not convincing.
In response, Senate Republicans channeled Elon Musk (G…F…Y…), blocking Biden’s additional $111 relief package that would also include aid to Israel, humanitarian aid to Gaza and some border funding.
The Senate voted 49-51, but failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed for the bill to be considered. Remarkable, Bernie Sanders (I-VT) voted against the measurewhile Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) changed his vote to “no” to preserve the ability to revisit the bill at a later date.
President Joe Biden has raised the possibility that “American troops will fight Russian troops” in a speech urging Congress to put aside the “petty, partisan, angry politics” holding up his multibillion-dollar aid package for Ukraine. He said he is willing to make “important compromises” with Republicans, but it is they who are unwilling to give up their “extreme” demands.
“This cannot wait,” Biden emphasized in televised remarks from the White House. “Congress must approve additional funding for Ukraine before the holiday break arrives. Simple as that. Frankly, I find it amazing that we’ve even gotten to this point. Republicans in Congress are willing to give Putin the greatest gift he could hope for and abandon our global leadership.”
“I am willing to make significant compromises at the border. We need to fix the broken border system. It is broken. And so far I have had no response,” Biden pleaded. He made the speech after a call with G7 leaders, who are said to be alarmed that US funding for Ukraine will dry up in just three weeks.
“If we walk away, how many of our European friends will continue to finance and at what rates will they continue to finance?” he posed.
And then the fear-mongering really gained momentum. He even went so far as to say that if Ukraine’s defense is not funded, it will lead to the country being steamrolled by the Russian military machine, and an emboldened Putin will then try to gobble up even more territory. This is what the US president said, as reported in The New York Times:
The president even raised the prospect that an emboldened Putin could pose a threat to NATO allies, forcing the United States to rush to their aid with the group’s troops. ‘If Putin takes over Ukraine, he won’t stop there’ Mr. Biden said. “It is important to look at the long term here. He will continue. He made it pretty clear.”
“If he continues, he will attack a NATO ally” which the United States is bound by treaty to help, “then we have something that we are not looking for and that we do not have today – American troops fight against Russian troops” Mr Biden said.
“Make no mistake,” he added. “Today’s vote will be long remembered and history will judge harshly those who turn their backs on the cause of freedom. We can’t let Putin win. I’ll say it again: we can’t let Putin win.”
Of course, this shaky ‘logic’ is the opposite of reality. It is the nearly two years of blank check spending that has only served to deepen US military involvement in the war, and this is what has landed Washington in yet another foreign quagmire.
The narrative that will soon emerge will also inevitably be that these tenacious Republicans “lost” the war in Ukraine, as Biden’s Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has done. already said. The MSM will also help the administration push this as a major talking point in the 2024 election… wait until it ends up on an endless CNN/NPR loop starting next November.
