The 25 Most Popular Halloween Costumes of 2024, According to Google

With Halloween quickly approaching, trick-or-treaters and costumed partygoers are getting ready to show off their 2024 looks. For those who need last-minute inspiration: GoogleTrends has its annual “Fear spirit‘ list of the 25 most popular costumes of the year.

The rankings are based on a comparison of Google search interest in the United States in September 2023 and September 2024. In other words, the list reflects costumes that “experienced the largest increase in search interest year over year,” rather than “the most searched for costume ideas in the general, writes Nextstar Media Group‘Michael Bartiromo.

According to Google, this is the most trending costume of this year Shrunken head Bob by Beetlejuice Beetlejuicea recently released sequel to the 1988 cult classic. While the small-headed man in a big yellow suit doesn’t have the biggest role in the new film, the character has already become an iconic part of the franchise.

The top three are rounded up Raygunthe Australian breakdancer who received zero points for her performance at the Summer Olympics in Paris, and KatNapa mean purple cat from the “Poppy Playtime‘ video game, which places players in an abandoned toy factory populated by sentient toys.

Last year the number one costume was Barbie – a trend that makes sense given Barbie’s status as one of the two largest movies from summer 2023. Google’s latest list shows that pop culture-inspired looks are once again gaining popularity, with a few exceptions (like the 11th-ranked Chipotle burrito).

Some characters out Inside out 2 appear on the rankings, including the personified emotions of envy, anger, disgust, fear and joy. Superhero favorites like Lady Deadpool, Wolverine and Gambit from the Deadpool and Wolverine spin-off also made the cut. And Bob wasn’t the only one Beetlejuice Beetlejuice character to arouse search interest: Deloresthe titular antagonist’s ex-wife, and Delia And Lydia Deetza stepmother and stepdaughter duo from both the original film and its sequel also appear on the list.

“This year we’re seeing a fascinating comeback of timeless Halloween looks, fueled by a mix of nostalgia, viral trends and recent pop culture influences,” writes Google Trends expert Hibaq Ali in a blog post. “And it’s clear that DIY is king.”

Some of the costumes on the list are inspired by real people. Pop singer Sabrina Timmermanwhose hits “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” dominated the summer charts were at number nine, while rapper Soulja Boy took the 24th spot.

In addition to the general trending costumes, the Google site features a interactive map show which costumes are popular in different parts of the country. Luna Lovegood of the Harry Potter franchise tops the list TulsaOklahoma for example, while Bigfoot is number one TallahasseeFlorida. The site also tracks trends in various costume categories, including the most popular children’s costumes (Disney’s Red Descendants is number one), duo looks (led by Wolverine and Deadpool) and dog costumes (with Dogpool, a canine version of Deadpool, ranking highest).
